Czesław Michniewicz as the head coach of the Polish national team
On 31 January 2022, Czesław Michniewicz became the new head coach of the Polish national team. "After much discussion, analysis and further consideration, I made a choice that I am satisfied with and consider to be the best possible choice under the current circumstances. Coach Michniewicz convinced me with his specific plan. Our main goal is the play-off matches and, as we both believe, promotion to the World Cup in Qatar," said Cezary Kulesza, President of the Polish Football Association. The 52-year-old coach signed a contract until the end of the year, with an option to extend it.
"The situation we found ourselves in at the turn of the year was really difficult. We were left without both a head coach and a staff to manage the national team. There was a limited number of coaches available on the market to apply for such a prestigious role, so we had to put emotions aside and conduct the whole process very carefully. I met with the coaches, analysed their ideas on how to run the team, negotiated the terms of the contract so that the situation we faced at the end of December would not happen again. I chose Czesław Michniewicz, who has the right qualities and experience to lead the national team in the fight for the World Cup," said Kulesza.
"Michniewicz has already worked with the youth national team, where he performed very well. He brilliantly engaged a group of young, talented players and knew how to win important matches in which his team was not the favourites. He proved it once again in recent months by advancing to the Europa League group stage with Legia. He is made to play for the highest goals and is highly regarded by players for his technique. He has the ability to beat strong opponents, is a great tactician and knows how to motivate a team," added the President of the Polish Football Association.
"I have never concealed the fact that I was negotiating with several coaches. I wanted to get different perspectives, hence my conversations with coaches from Poland and abroad. One of them was Adam Nawałka. He is a professional in every way. The final decision was determined by details. Coach Michniewicz can count on my full support and commitment. I understand perfectly well the excitement of the fans and the media associated with the selection of a new head coach of the Polish national team. This is the most important coaching position in Polish sport. For me, on the other hand, the last month has been a time of hard work, meetings and talks with coaches, analysing many details. Now that the choice has been made, all that matters is "Mission Russia". Promotion is our goal and I believe that with Czesław Michniewicz on the coaching bench this task is possible to achieve. We look to the future with optimism, which is also characteristic of our head coach," concluded Cezary Kulesza.
