Adam Nawałka: Another step towards a better team

We are beginning the first direct phase of preparing for the finals of Euro 2016  - stressed Adam Nawałka, head coach of the Poland national football team, before the matches against Serbia and Finland which will take place in March.

One might want to say: "At last!". After four months of break we will once more see the Poland national team on the field.

Despite the fact that the team played their last match in November last year, all of us have been working at full power. Naturally, a moment of joy after qualifying is always needed and we also had our own, but on the next day we immediately began preparing for the Euro. The last few months passed by very quickly. This time was devoted to organizational matters, both concerning preparing for the tournament as well as France; there was the draw along the way. The staff continues to work very hard and I can only feel sorry for their wives (laughs). The players could not relax for a moment either. The breaks between games were short and everyone quickly returned to working hard and intensively in order to be in top form.

During the last few months you visited many Polish players who normally play in foreign leagues. Together with the staff you also spent a lot of time performing analyses.

We finished the season with analyses. We noted progress the team has made as well as corrections we need to make in the way we play. We also monitor the players extensively. After each game we prepare reports concerning the players' performance. We have a lot of data. We started our observations in in January, first in foreign leagues, and later in Polish Ekstraklasa. We eagerly waited to meet the players and relay our information. Now we are beginning the first direct phase of preparing for the finals of Euro 2016.

The March training camp will be very intense.

We would like to use this time optimally, keeping the "fewer words, more actions" principle in mind, and take another step towards a better team. Matches against tough opponents, which Serbia and Finland national teams undoubtedly are, will provide an excellent opportunity to improve the way we play and set pieces as well as to test out particular plans pertaining to individual players.

Can the style of play of Serbia and Finland national teams be somehow compared to the performance of the teams we are to face during the group stage of Euro 2016?

It is comparable. We conduct our own analyses, but we will reveal neither the opponents' strong nor their weak points. I am very satisfied with the choice of our next rivals. Serbia represents this highest level, they have players who compete in the best leagues and for the best clubs on their team. We will have the opportunity to test ourselves against a difficult opponent. Finland team's play is also very solid. We will do our best to play two great matches in order for our team to grow and become ever better.

President Zbigniew Boniek stresses that winning these matches in March is not the most important; right now, preparing for the Euro takes the highest priority.

Preparing is the most important. Nevertheless, one goes to every game with a will to fight for victory and do one's best; the matches against Serbia and Finland will be no exceptions.

Several new players will be given a chance to play during the matches in March. Examples include Bartosz Salamon, Paweł Wszołek or Filip Starzyński.

The team is stable and based on players who have proven themselves during Poland national team's past matches and who keep up good form in their clubs. It is the result of over three years of hard work on the part of the players as well as the entire coaching staff. A chance to play in the matches in March will also be given to players who stand out during league games and can join the competition to go to Euro in France. Selection in the national team is never over. Naturally, anyone wishing to play for the national team needs to demonstrate an appropriate level of abilities. We evaluate the usefulness. We approach each nomination on an individual basis. We, the staff, have our criteria and we proceed in accordance with them. We want to go forward, to constantly develop.
